  • Electric Blue - Chichken Fish

...for those of you that know...I bought my first cichlid (besides angels). I brought him home in a bucket...transfered him from his bag...just wasn't enough room I think. But I was told he was supposed to be kinda mean

No...I think I bought a chicken fish. I put him in a 50 gal with some albino cories, and some guppy culls..thinking he might would eat them. HA...he went an hid..which I figured was NTS(new tank syndrome). This morning I go about my feedings, and he is still hiding. He came out for some food, but them went right back in his hidey hole after a couple of the cories stole food practically from his MOUTH!...then I witnessed a couple of the guppies go investigate him..only for him to RUN AWAY

Big blue mean fish(electric blue cichlid)= big pretty chicken fish

Any info on this scardy cat would be appreciated. I bought him thinking he would eat my guppy culls....I may need something different if he is not up for the job.

that male trimac that went for only $1 would have been perfect for you. easy to take care of and full of character. they are like almost like fish tank puppies.

    here he is 2days ago

Electric Blue's are a Malawi Fish that would do great with a number of other Malawi fishes.

I would get atleast a 55 gallon, and decorate the tank with varies rocks/caves and whatnot.

Zebra's of varies colors are a good choice. When I kept Malawi fish, I did not like my mbuna and Peacocks together, kinds kept the peacocks all stressed and a little torn up.

You are taking yor first steps to conversion, Nadine.. lol...

Full Grown Electric Blue Johanni (?) should get 4.5-5.5" when full grown.

You could always get him a girlfriend, then he might get a pair.

            The females stay yellow

So...day 3, still a chicken, comes out for food, only to be bumped into by the cories, and then he runs and hides behind a rock.
The guppies can scare him out of his hiding place....where ever that may be.

K..on the note of Malawi....he is in a 50 gal, so I can put what...one or two fish with him? what kinds? and you say peacock...? the only peacocks I have are endlers, and the birds...so I know you are speaking of something different.

Oh, adn if he don't grow a pair soon...I guess I can revert to buying a Oscar...I know they will eat ANYTHING!

Oscars are nice because they really respond to the owner, but so will most CA cichlids. the only problem with oscars is that they grow too fast and you will eventually need at least a 6ft tank.

Thanks..now one more dumb question..which one will be best suited as a tank mate, or does it matter? I don't want them to kill each other, and don't really care what the color is...just has to eat guppies!

not sure. i dont keep any africans so i dont know how aggressive they are. i guess you ould go with any peacock. i think the sunshine and german reds are really nice but can be pricey. you could also look for a female ahli.
