  • Xenotilapia melanogenys - 115 gallon will it work?

I am looking to put 10 of these in my 115 gallon once I move out the Tropheus Annectens.

For those that have some experience with these fish, or read on them, would a group of 10 be happy here?

    115 Gallon - 60" x 18" footprint, PFS, almost no rocks, 2-80W T5s 12K White Actinic, 2262 and 2217 Eheim filtration.

    Let me know your opinions...

    Thanks,

    Geoff

i never had any experience with this..but i did do some reading on them...
i think 5 feet tank should be ok...
but how many males are you planing to put in there?
i think 1 or 2 should be good?

I am looking to get a group of 10, and I need to confirm the ratio's

I was thinking something like 4M 6F or something along that lines.

              the ones I have are
              Xenotilapia ochrogenys

well I think Tim and me have these they are verry addicting like tropheus and run in the same price range

they are pretty aggressive and mine are barley breaking 2" I am afraid to put them in my troph tank

1 bite and there goes there whole tail

Are you getting full grown ?

              here are mine

and a pic I found on the net

Well Geoff, I did at one point have 10 in a 90, and it was working fine. I lost 2 from acclimation within the first week, but 8 stayed comfortably in the 90 with a colony of cyps before I sold them off.

Personally, if I were you I'd try to shoot for 15. These are very sensitive fish and do not acclimate well if your getting wilds. That way if you do end up losing a few, you'll still have 10-12 roughly.

5 foot tank should not be an issue, just be aware that you'll need a decent sized bed of sand and an open scape if you want them to start pairing up asap. Xenos like to breed in pits.

                  Hope this helps,
                  J

Jonathan are they more sensitive like Paracyps? Or we talking just something difficult?
