Aggro :) a 55 is a very small tank. Here is what I suggest.
Look here and find someone who is selling Fry.
You are going to be looking for about 20 Fry.
Next start saving pennies. You have about 6-8 months to save your pennies up.
Buy a 90/110/120/150 4ft tank any size 5ft or above length tank.
The 4ft tanks listed above will not require more space left to right than the 55, but front to back increases with 6" for the 90/110 and 12" for the 120/150.

Ofcourse please remember that you will most likely need to upgrade your filtration too.
SA are messy and like a good filtration system. Make sure that you are giving your Africans more water movement than what the SA's are used to.

I say save your money, go on the spring tank tour and then by the end of that evening you'll know if you really like trophs (which you will - just look at the rest of the addicts on this board!) and you'll have the cash to get what you truly want and have some good ideas on what type of system to setup (take LOTS of pictures!).

Just my .02 cents. Good Luck!

For all the info you need, read everything in the Houston Tropheus and Petrochromis Club forum here on HFB.

I understand the attraction, but also think that fish shouldn't be housed in a tank unsuitable for their needs just to see if you like them. This goes for any fish. Kind of like buying a pacu and a 10g tank - there's no way to be certain that you're going to buy the bigger tank along the road, because who knows what can happen between now and then, when the fish REALLY needs it? Save up and do it right the first time and you'll end up saving loads of money, AND get a lot more enjoyment out of fish that are happy and "in their element," so to speak. :)

Like jeebus said, go on a tank tour, read the numerous threads here, watch the tons of videos on YouTube of Tropheus; basically, do research like you would for any other fish, and get a feel for them before you dive. It's worth it for you AND the fish.

Save your money. The words "super cheap" and "Trophs" don't go together. Read..read..read... then.....read some more. You don't want to make any costly mistakes that could have been avoided if you had done your homework. (Ex. you stated in your post that you wanted 5 or so. IMO..that may be a recipe for disaster. You will want to get 15 - 20)

My brother always has fry that he sells fairly cheap. Send him a PM and let him know you're interested. If he cant give you all the info, he'll lead you in the direction of someone that can. One of these days I'll probably have a Troph colony also, but I'll always love my Fronts.

                      yellow = ikola

Thick yellow stripe can be Kiriza or Ikola. The way to tell is that with the Ikola, the stripe stops at where the dorsal fin attaches to the back. On the Kiriza, it goes through the dorsal fin.

I say just wait. Read up on them some more. Find out what you really want or if you even really want to take care of them.

Once you decide what you want go for it.

                              Five Tropheus = one Tropheus.
Sell your fish in the big tank and save the proceeds so you can get 25-30 fry and rock a Tropheus tank.
Once you have Trophs, you will see: there is no other fish! (except Petro's)
Listen to the advice given on the forum about Trophs. These peeps know their shizzzz. Read and ask questions about what you've read: part of the experience is to find stuff out on your own and come back with questions.
