  • Are these fish good choices?

I contacted Dave's Fish about adding new fish in my 90g tank, and here are the ones he suggested. Are these good choices? I like them all and was thinking of 1 male of each:

Aulonocara jacobfreibergi Hongi Island @ 29.00 (4" males)
Aulonocara koningsi Mbenji 'Blue Regal' @ 35.00 (4" males)
    Aulonocara sp. 'Walteri' Likoma @ 29.00 (3" males) or 39.00 (5" males)
Aulonocara stuartgranti Cobwe 'Blue Regal' @ 39.00 (4" males)
Protomelas sp. 'Steveni Taiwan' Higga Reef @ 35.00 (4" males)

This is what I have in the tank right now. I am thinking of doing a lab/hap/peacock type of tank.

    12 yellow labs (labidochromis caeruleus)
    7 Synodontis petricola
3 bristlenose plecos (Ancistrus sp.) common variety
1 lemon cichlid (yellow Neolamprologus leleupi)
    1 eartheater (Geophagus brachybranchus)

Are you going for authentic Malawi, or just what you like?

I am by no means an expert because I am just beginning but, in my opinion, the Synodontis are an excellent choice. We have some lemon yellows in with our Red Rainbows and they are beautiful. They have a lot of personality and are very active. And, I love plecos of any kind and think they are an awesome addition to any tank. Keep us informed and post pics.

It should work. You could lose a Bristlenose or two if you wanted, but three will work. I think you could add a couple more Peacocks too.

I have the 3 BN plecos for algae duty. They do a wonderful job! I'm hoping I got at least 1M and 1F in the bunch in case they decide to do more than clean algae. )

Thanks for the feedback on the fish choices. I'm going to call Dave to get them.

I'm also going to get some fish from Ultimate, but they're not being as helpful in selecting fish for me over the phone so I don't know what I'll get. I hope I can trust them to not make bad suggestions for me. They're too far away for me to stop by, write down a list of their fish, go home to check on them, and then go back to actually buy the fish.

I'm getting really excited now! I was going to go to Ultimate today, but got derailed by fiddling with my tanks too long. I plan to go tomorrow. So I should have new fish in the tank soon!

If the weather's too cold for Dave to ship his fish, I'll make a drive up to San Antonio to get them in person. I have several battery operated air pumps (great for hurricanes!) that I can use to transport the fish back.

The only concern is that I normally quarantine all new fish before putting them in my main tank, but I can't possibly quarantine so many new fish. So I'm going to go against my normal practice and put them fish directly in my 90g without any quarantine. I hope I don't live to regret this.
