  • Help Identify A Tanganyikan Fish

I was watching the Lake Tanganyikan video "Jewels of the Rift" for the 100th time and there is a fish that I have never seen in stores, on a list, etc and I was wondering if you guys could help identify it. If you watch the video via YouTube, the fish in question is shown at 5:21-5:27. I have posted the video to make this process a little easier. HELP!!

Thanxx.... Mike. I didn't know that the name had changed. I agree with you that you never ever see them in the LFS but you can order them.

BTW...did enatiopus sp. kilesea change also ?

A detailed account on the reproduction of this beautiful sand dweller from lake Tanganyika, Xenotilapia melanogenys

this doesn't specifically say anything about its name changing but is repeatedly referred to as X. sp kilesa. im guessing they both changed since they are basically the same fish except for minor color differences. i think its just a different variant of X. melanogenys anyways.

last time i saw little african aquatics had some F1's. these guys are sand sifting pit diggers so the biggest footprint you can get on a tank is best and as usual less males the better.

I know a few guys that have had both. Nice little fish. I never really got into the sandsifters myself. Most stores dont sell them cause they wont colour up til they mature. And unfortunately "right now" colours are a key selling feature.

More specifically, it's Enantiopus sp. 'Kilesa'. It's somewhat hard to find nice ones of that particular variant. Also, in my opinion, a 75 is too small as the spawning pit they make is usually over 2 feet across. The male lays in the pit and flutters attracting the females from above often from groups of hundreds of these pits...so they need quite a bit of depth as well.

Here's a place to get them:

Dave has the Zambian Black Faced variant on his list...somewhat cheaper:
