  • 75 gallon Peacock Tank ?

    Hi All,

I have a 58 gallon mbuna tank that been up and running for about 3 years. Just acquired a 75 gallon tank and was thinking about setting up a peacock tank. I have read they are a bit more lay back than the mbuna and a bit less aggression. I do not like an aggressive tank and had to return two species in my mbuna tank for that reason.

The perimeters for keeping them are basically the same and like the looks of them alot.
Some have talked about having an all male tank because of colors etc and some a 1 to 3 mix.

Any feedback on this type of tank would be appreciated.

Id do all males. It'll be a slightly aggressive tank but it'll be awesome to look at.

One thing I'll say is that in my experience it's best to (at least as much as possible) acquire what you're looking for in a small size and raise them together. I've had multiple experiences where it can be extremely difficult to add a new peacock of 4"-5" if the existing ones are also that size. Adding smaller ones seems to be OK, and I assume that's because they're not perceived as a threat, but adding an adult to an existing tank of adults can be quite harrowing.

Good advice. Buy em small and raise em together.

I'm planning a new tank after a few things ease up.

              I am looking at peacocks.

What i was told is that it's best to keep one type and mix them with a hap strain.

All males of course and I'll second getting juveniles and raising them together you can cull the females and drab males as they grow.

If you get all adults you stand the chance of having a dominant male and he will stress the other males and their colors won't standout as they should.

One way you can add adults that works is right before adding them re-arrange the scape and drop them in cover the tank with a blanket or something so that its pitch black for a day or two then they wont realize that they have new friends they will think they were always there.
