the heat produced was insignifigant.

only 1.5 degree rise to 80.5f, so thats not the issue.

i dont know wth happened, but when i post the pics i hope to find out.

its all good traci.

the rocks only displaced 3" of water, which in a 10g is like 2.25g.

so it wasnt just 3g of water in the tank.

well, i just cleaned the canister and that same smell that i talked about earlier, the smell of rotten eggs and sulfur, aka the smell of the sufer dioxide bubbles i thought might have been the cause came out of the canister filter and i smelt this smell last night after i turned on the ph and it started agitating the sand.

so i guess this is the cause of their untimely demise.

what culd have caused this buildup so quickly, i had an eheim ecco 2234 on their with weekly 75% wc's and i didnt overfeed.

i only had 13 .5"-1.25" simos in their.

i had a 1.5" layer of leslies pool filter sand.

any ideas on what could have caused the major buildup?

also, the simos dug little pits/hideouts under every rock all the time, so i would think it would slowly be released from the sand????


this is ridiculous, i have never lost a tank full of healthy fish over night.

any ideas?

For what it's worth, I know someone who refuses to use sand in any tank because he swears he lost an entire tank of fish due to that buildup in the sand that you are talking about.

My Livua tank has 2-3" of sand in there and I never mess with it. Been running for a year now.

Be careful with that...I stir mine a couple times a month to release the gas pockets...but I'm paranoid...and I use that super fine sugar sand which tends to pack down a lot faster than the larger grain sands.

I think this really helps move the sand around.

I don't do anything to my sand either....but then again I don't like thick sand beds and go with about 1/2'' for the above reason you mentioned.
