  • Suggestions for Inhabitants

I'm moving to DC so I'm going to be breaking down my tank and have decided that I'm going to get a fresh start.

I have a 75 gallon tank with a cannister filter and large HOB filter as well.

I'm 100% sure I want to go with cichlids and fairly certain I'm going to go with Africans.

Although I've been keeping fish for sometime now, I'm fairly new to cichlids and I thought I might be able to get some suggestions/help with stocking the tank and with general tank setup/layout.

I prefer to keep smaller fish (<4-5 inches) rather than have a few large fish. I'm more interested in behavior than being brightly colored. I would also not like to spend a lot of money on fish either. Other than that I'm open to pretty much anything. I've been reading about shelldwellers and they seem interesting. If anyone has any good info or suggestions about them it would be appreciated. Looking forward to hearing your replies.

Sounds like you'll be looking at Tanganyikans. Some species that Genus names that come to mind are cyprichromis (non-jumbo), ectodus, xenotilapia, callochromis, neolamprologus, lamprologus, altolamprologus, telematochromis, and julidochromis. These fish cannot all be housed together. I'd suggest one fish to build your tank around. . . and the we can discuss what other fish will go well together with the one that you have chosen.

Have you considered a species tank? In my opinion, that is when you see the most interesting behaviors...
    Scarecrow : I haven't got a brain... only straw.
Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.
