  • mixing tank

right now in my 125 gallon-fx5 i have 2 peacocks, large pleco, 1 yellow lab, clown loach, and 6 demasoni.

i want to add a max colony of 15 of breeding tropheus. im not to sure what type yet. leaning towards kasanga.

will this work? my cichlids now are getting along fine.

i put my 1 mouth brooding demasoni in my 30 gallon with 2 juvi peacocks and a small pleco.

i also plan on getting a wet/dry. either store bought or DIY. need advise.
    Damn this hobby......

This can work . Is it ideal ?...I don't think so . The key word here is "breeding " . I have kept Trophs with Demasoni with no problem at all . I actually love that setup because the Demasoni gave the tank a nice color contrast . Plus the Demasoni had no problem at all with keeping up with the Moops at feeding time . The only reason I switched things to an all Trophs tank is because I wanted to try and breed the Trophs . I know for a fact that Demasoni and Peacocks will eat fry...so they had to go . So...with that said.....if you're not looking to breed the Trophs...then go for it .

What if I have a breeding tank? I can convert my 30 gallon into one. If I let them spawn in the 125 and once I see the female has eggs in her mouth I can take her out and put it in the 30.

My 30 has 3 fry and my demasoni looks like it still has some in her mouth.

      Should I strip it?

This may or may not work . The problem that concerns me is when you try to reintroduce the female back into the colony once she has been out for a while . She will most likely loose her place in the hierarchy and they may not accept her back at all . I have never had this happen personally , but I have read post on different forums about this issue. I personally like the idea of letting her hold for 20 days and then stripping her . This way she can immediately go back into the group without any problems .

I would just go ahead and strip her of the last remaining fry .

          ok. never strip on before.....
but ENIN just came by looking to buy my canopy and made me curious about my set up.
currently all im using as a filter is fluval fx5 and im not checking PH, dont have a thermometer but do have a 200w heater set at 80
i do a 50% water change weekly by pumping out then using the water holes to fill back up. then i de-chlorine by adding enough for the whole tank.

          is this ok?

i do plan on adding a wet/dry very soon.
          Damn this hobby......

You're doing everything fine . If I were to change anything in your routine....I would put the dechlorinator in tank just before you start to refill . Other than that...everything sounds great .

I did a water change Sunday and then Monday my demasoni doesn't look like she's holding anymore!! I've only seen 3fry still. Hopefully the 2 juvi peacocks haven't ate any. I had to put the mom back into the big tank cause she bit the eye off of a 2 1/2 in pleco!!!! She's mean.

I have had my trophs for about 3 month. The one thing that ive learned is that they love the water movement. If you are going to put a colony in your 125 I would recomend usimg atleast one powerhead. I use two powerheads, a AC110, a walmart 60 HOB, and a Fluval 305. Like I said, Im still very new at this but my fry have grown from .75~1" to 2.5~3" in 3 months. There are also advantages to having HOB filters that were exsplained to me. If you position them correctly with the flow in the tank then they clean alot of poop for you. Im not sure where i read it nut i think i saw that you need atleast x10 turnover for trophs. Like i said though, im very new and dont believe me lol, GeneD has a article here about it. Very good info. Good luck.
                10 Gallon (emergency tank)
                20 Gallon (emrgency tank)
58 gallon ( Tetra, Platie, Cory)
                125 Gallon (Ikola)

if i move all my fish into the 125g and use the 30 as a grow out tank, what other fish can i put in there that wont eat my fry?

i have 3 demasoni fry in my 30 now with a one eyed pleco. they are free swimming but still hiding between then natural gravel and a few large river stones.

how do i feed these guys? they never come out, thats why i moved the 2 juvi peacocks. spirulina flakes?

If you are using a gravel substrate...then I would suggest using a good flake food for the fry .

I don't think you will be able to add anything to the fry tank other than some more fry . Once your fry reaches about an inch then you can probably add some juvies .
