This is the first in a series of posts about the fundamentals of aquascaping. I’m posting these because I’ve found them very helpful in creating ... Read more

When you're planning out an aquascape, one of the most important aspects is where it will draw the viewer's gaze. In fact, a viewer's gaze is what the aquascape is all about. The primary goal of an aquascape is to be pleasing, relaxing, and interesting to look at for the viewer. In order to do so, you need to set a sort of "anchor" for the mind. This is called the focal point. It is the point that draws the gaze of the viewer first, from which they can explore the rest of the tank. A focal point can consist of almost anything, from a red leaved plant to a rock or a piece of driftwood. The only thing it must do is draw attention. You can't have a plant that blends in with every other plant be the focal point, you have to make it stand out in some way. There are a few simple things to remember about a focal point.

i could sit and stare at this tank all day especially when just the crnter light is on it looks really good plus i was thinking more about the fish than myself in planningan enviromrnt pleasing to more them than myself to see them happy is the greateset joy i hAve enough places to hide , play, and relaxe they are happy heathy fish and defenatly not board. they even have floating lily pads to stir their curiousity and just to sit andwatch their minds work is interesting enough for me...

Ok, if fish "happiness" is your argument, then why not scape it like a biotope?

The Golden rule is pleasing to the eye b/c is follows nature.

but hey, if you "think" your fishes are happy and you are happy with a booboo scaped tank then thats cool too.

                      careful with those ghost shrimp.

They can carry illnesses and kill your fish.

Thai, remind me not to have you critique my tanks. Cut the kids a break. We can not all be ballin like you.
That being said, the tank is a little busy for me. I also am not a fan of the multi-color fake plants. I like more natural looking plants. If you like it though, it is just right.

It's not about balling. It's just about laying the scape martial out the right way.

Just b/c a person spends money on their tank don't mean it's going to look good bro.
