  • jewels of what kind?

    dont wanna sound like a complete idiot but been tryin to figure out the difference between my two jewels and why they dont get along that well anymore also can they be sexed by apperance here are some pictures of them one i know is blood red but the other not to sure it only shows one blck spot on the gill plate none on the body any info would surley help?

    Check out the fins. I the dorsal and anal arr pointy it's a male. Before I got rid of mine, the male would have really bright colors and the female would be less vibrant. Of course, if they're too small the fin wont show it yet.


    Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone! This is just my cursory knowledge.

            From What i can see, both are males. The males have the blue spots all over their tails, while the females only on the bottom half.

              You may have two different species there. The one on the top looks like a hemichromis bimaculatus while the other is clearly hemichromis guttatus. Both are sold as "jewels" though Paul Loiselle stated in his book, "The Cichlid Aquarium", that he though H. guttatus was the original Jewel.

                could this be one reason that they dont get alongnow? i knew they where two diffrent jewels and was curious as to what kind thanks
