  • Yellow Lab Fry - Newbie

    Experts,

I hope it is not too late to ask this question.

My yellow lab 2" was holding it's fry or egg couple of weeks ago. Not sure when it started , so I didn't know when to strip.

When I came back after a weekend trip (when the lights were off), the fry was gone from mom's mouth.

When I tried to look in the nooks & crevices of the rocks the mom was swimming around, I found 2 babies hiding.

I guess I was too late in stripping.

    1) Should I leave the 2 babies (may be more) in the tank?
The tank has a big holey rock, a lot of artificial plants, big rocks with hiding places.
    2) How can I feed them selectively?

    3) Will they survive? Tanks has yellow lab, parrots, bala shark, clown loach, tiger barb, gauramis

    4) Have the rest of the babies been eaten by other fishes(may be mom)?

Please let me know. I need your expert opinions.

    Thanks much,

    1.i'd take them out
2.they will find their own food.if you feed flakes, they will find crumbs
3.most of your fish will eat them if they can catch them.that being said, mbuna fry are good at hiding
4.a 2" fish may not have many fry,but chances are she had more than 2.
    5.good luck

My Kenyi recently did the same thing. I had no clue she was even holding. I cleaned the tank last weekend and was able to catch 22 babies.

Just keep in mind that the holes in the holey rock can go pretty deep. I've taken rock out before to get fry and was not able to find them in the tank. After putting it all back together the fry showed up again. I guess they got real deep into the rocks. I'd personally just leave them in there.
