  • New tank video

This is my new Victorian tank. 40g Breeder tank. I went the more male route so the females don't get beat up on, and that the dominant male has to distribute his hatred and childhood memories on more than just 1-2 other males.

    Stock:
6m/4f Haplochromis sp. 44 "Thick Skin" - Males are 3.5-5"
    1m/2f Pundamilia Nyererei - Male is 4"

I added the Thick Skins into the tank last night, then added the Nyererei this morning without any change in scaping. These haps are supposibly real aggressive, but they apparently never met this smaller Mr. Pundamillia... I got home from work today to see all the "bigger" haps pushed to about 20% of the tank where they were facing off to who dominates that 20%... Since he has never been in a tank with another male, his colors were amazing!

Enjoy the herding of the sheep to their corner

          Thanks!

I did not I had a real limited time frame to pick up the sp.44s, so I had to speed up the stand process. Probably for the best - I'll be tossing on some kind of particle board to the back to hide the equipment and throw in a shelf or two still though

I just finished releasing about 30 sp.44 fry into a breeder net. Could be interesting since these guys show full color and can breed at 1.5"

              Another video -

I went to Johns last night to pick up Spots monster male Thick Skin... this guy is probably pushing close to 7". At her house, it was in a tank with 2x 14" breeding tiger oscars. I put him in the tank, took out my Nyererei and rearranged the tank. Few hours later, added Mr Nyererei and this is what happened. I forgot to crop the video, so just jump to 4:00. At the time, I'd thought "size ain't squat" but I woke up this morning to Mr nyererei somewhat calm in the tank. Pretty sure he lost a liplock with the big guy that I didnt catch on video. This was my last test before I toss the firecracker in a 20gal tank alone for the rest of his existance!

Just got home from work.. and I think that did the job. Tank seems real calm.. occasional chasing, but that wont ever go away. Just a shame I had to add a fish 2x the length and 5x the weight to keep him in check.
