Never think of it as wasting a filter think of it as just seeing how many filters you can cram in your stand. And when you run out of room there is no shame in putting a filter outside of the stand ive done that in the past

Well, after healing up in a separate tank I put the sub male back in. Aggression started right back up... so I did a 95% water change and rearranged the scape. Right now I have a blanket covering the tank. I was thinking a day or 2, but how long should I leave them in darkness?

I've never left my fish in darkness to slow down aggression. My fish sometimes fight more when the lights are off. I still think there are not enough fish in your tank to spread out the aggression. IMO

Idk where I heard that helps (blacking out tank), ill take the blanket off today. How many fish do you think I should have in there?

At least 20 pack them in there. They'll calm down
