Lighting for 135 with trophs

Hi all,

Thanks to a number of members I now have a lovely 135 with tropheus lufubu and a couple of other "leftovers" from a former tank. Don't worry things are very going well and plans are in motion to make another move for the outsiders.

My question. I have a single 36" standard florecent on the tank now. I would like to upgrade the lighting to some thing that will show off the colors (already nice) but not create a weekly algae battle. Coming from saltwater I am hoping for relative ease of maintenance.

Any thoughts?

Being that trophs are grazers, having a little algae battle might be a good thing

That being said, LED might be the way to go for their efficiency. I have 2 36" strips on my 125 and I love them. Ecoxotic 8000k stunners. Others have good reviews on the ones by Truelumen and Superbright LED

I've got 2 - 36"-48" Marineland Double Bright LEDs on my 6" troph tanks and love the look. I personally won't use any other lighting after using these LEDs. I've been really impressed with how good they look.

Fair enough. I do want light and that will cause growth. I suppose I am looking for lights that will show off the fish the best.

I have a canopy and like it.... That's one of my concerns. Can I put two 36" lights under the canopy? It seems lots of them have legs that stretch out to go over the rim of the aquarium. That won't work with the canopy.

I looked at the LEDs. But I watched some pics/vids that showed a spotlight effect that I'm not sure I am fond of.

What I would really like is a programmable/multi-power cord unit that could allow me to adjust the amount of light that is delivered throughout the day. Like I did on the reef. Start low and work up and then work down. Two settings or cords would be fine.

Of course that's why I am asking. Lots of advice with no feedback out there in the big old internet.

The 38" led fixture should fit on your tank with a canopy. I have one on my 75g.

I use 2 Marineland Double Bright LED 3 footers on my 180g 6 foot tank. They do a great job. I have them on auto-timers as I only use the white LED lights. I also have LED moonlights purchased from digikits on a separate auto-timer.
