You think I should bleach it first or soak it or something? I've never had to do that before and I'm hoping the manzanita issue was just a fluke.
I won't hurt to let it soak with a little bleach for about 15-30, then remove it, rinse it, and soak it in clean water for a few days. Soaking in HOT water will also do the trick. Just like sterilizing stuff at the hospital. It will also help with removing any bleach if you go that route as well. What type if wood are you gonna go with? Or are you just gonna pick what looks nice and go with it?

    • I'm so glad to hear things are going well for the while clouds after the overhaul! I hope they're still doing well! Congrats on the shrimplets, too! Post pics when you get a chance!

Thanks b. I will go with the scalding water method to start with. I feel like the manzanita I had must have grown in a contaminated area, as Vicki had suggested, because it took over 6 weeks to leach out whatever it did. I like manzanita because it has little if any tannins and doesn't usually turn water brown... though I have Purigen to help take care of that too, and substrate buffers to keep the water alkaline. Manzanita has been hard to find, so I might just go with whatever looks good and whatever I can find over the weekend. This weekend will be all tank-scaping since I can't be with my family this Thanksgiving! So I will be thankful for my fish that are still alive. Ha!

Yes! They are doing lovely. I am about to lose one more but he had lost his dorsal fin in a fight and was looking poorly from the start. The 5 remaining ones are healthy and happy as clams. :)
The shrimplets are still in bright yellow egg form! My youngest yellow shrimp is now also berried but with only 3-4 eggs. I think it's her first batch!

          • So cool you have another berried shrimp! You'll have a good size colony before long. If I could figure out where to put another small tank, I'd get another shrimp colony like yellows. They are so enjoyable! Get pics of yours if you can! I'd love to see them!

For some reason, the way the glass is with this nano, my camera that normally takes good pics for my other tanks can't seem to focus at all. I'll still try messing around with the settings. I'd love to get cardinal shrimp... the red ones with white claws... so *awesome*

Vicki are you and the hubby planning on coming to the GHAC xmas party??

              • I understand the camera focus problem all too well. And then there's the fun of finally getting the shot all lined up and either the fish moves or another fish darts in front or my cats decides it's time for attention!

I just saw the thread about the party. I won't say for sure I'm not going, but I tend to be shy about those kinds of things. So unless I already know the people personally, I don't feel comfortable going.

Well, we'd love to have you! I went last time knowing only 1 person and left knowing so many more. It was great! Everyone was so nice. Hope to see you there, but if not, I'll see you back on the box! :)

                  • OK! So I went to FG to pick up some new driftwood. I talked to them for a long time about where it came from, how it had been treated, etc. I felt pretty comfortable after the conversation so I picked up 4 pieces. I've soaked 'em in hot water, scrubbed them, and added them to the tank. They're nearly waterlogged since they came from water, but they still need some more time, and will probably need some Purigen, which I'm finally recharging. Will work on tweaking my initial scape tomorrow if the pieces are finally heavy enough to stay put.

I also made my first impulse buy ever!! (Thanks to watching eklikewhoa and his impulse buys lol.) I bought 6 absolutely stunning furcata rainbows (Pseudomugil furcatus), aka blue-eyed forktails. They are doing very well so far and the white clouds are a little confused but are dealing with the change well. ) The light is off for the rest of the night, but I'll post more pics tomorrow or the day after, when I'm a little happier with the scape. I'm going to start a new thread FINALLY!!

                      You already know me and B . . .

Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

I was at FG today, as well, and I was looking at the furcatus, too, but didn't get any. Almost got some tetras. . .
Tell your boss you need to go home to take care of your "cichlids." It sounds an awful lot like "sick kids." )

                              • Ok! Here's pics. Please don't comment on the rocks/rock placement because they're just in place holding down the new driftwood as it waterlogs fully. I'll rearrange them and the shells later. Helpful comments welcome on wood placement. I tried to get good pics of the furcata rainbows but finally ended up taking a video as well. Again, this is all really haphazard right now but I had to post something.
