  • Weird Face Coloration

I have three F1 buccochromis in a 75G tank, each is about five inches long. I've had them about a year and they were about 1.5" when I got them.

One of them has some pretty bizarre coloration on his face. One side is the normal silver with yellow on the neck, but the other is almost black/very dark grey. When he turns towards you it's perfectly split down the front of his face. It's wild!

Anyone seen anything like this before? I'll try to post a picture later today if I can get him to hold still long enough.

None the less it sounds very interesting. One thing I have noticed from all the fish I've seen is they can be the same species but genetics can produce some interesting color patterns and combinations.

A guy named James martin on cichlids.com has a labeothopheus trewavasae with a half black face just like your discribing. Nothing has deteriorated about the.fish and he's been this way for several months. He still breeds and eats and shows full color. Its just a weird color change that seems to have little to know effect but there have been reports of fish getting this then slowly deteriorating. So if he's cool and has been like this for a couple months he's probably fine.

Here are some pics. The first is the left side of his face, dark. The second is the right side of his face, normal. The third is the best I could get from the front, but you can see the difference.

It's really weird, that's for sure. S/he seems healthy enough, appetite hasn't been affected.
