  • Please ID this fish

I've had this fish for almost 2 years, but it's not matching anything on my list. I think it might be a Pseudotropheus acei, but it's not exactly the same as what I see in pictures. My fish is very dark blue, almost black, and has much more yellow in the fins. The blue seems almost velvety and not shiny in appearance.

The yellow doesn't show up that brightly in the tank normally. The fish was at the top of the tank, and the tank lights illuminated his fins more than normal. I couldn't get him to move even with eating so these are the best photos I could get.

I'm sorry the pics are so bad. My camera batteries ran out so I'm using my phone.

Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

I've looked all over and haven't been able to figure it out. He's pretty whatever he is.

Not an Ps. acei. . . hmm. It does have a white tinge across the top of its dorsal fin, correct? It is some sort of peacock.

Where did you get him? Sometimes that helps...

I don't remember where I got him. He's not on any of my lists so I either got him from Extreme as one of my very first fish for the tank or he was mismarked.

I got a few fish (mostly the mbuna's in the tank) from Extreme when I first got my tank. Then I went up north and got a bunch of juvenile peacocks and haps from ?? (that store with mostly cichlids, can't remember the name at the moment). Then I ordered some from Dave's Fish, but most of those died. That's been it other than the fish I just recently acquired.

I'm looking at fish, and I'm thinking he might be some kind of Copadichromis? Possibly even a female?

Finnage points to a male. Copadichromis sounds like a good guess to me.

This one looks most promising. Let me see if I can match it up from the info on the internet and what I see in my tank.

After looking at everything, I'm going to say this one is most likely the Lemon Jake, as Tater Tot suggested. I bet I got him from Dave's Fish.

So he's now identified as Aulonocara jacobfreibergi (Undu Reef) "Lemon Jake". Thanks for everyone's help!

looks like a lemon jake. Sometimes if they are raised in a small tank, their eyes are really big in comparison to their face.

Well, he's going to be going to beto in a trade. He has a lot more tanks so maybe he'll find a tank where he's happy and we'll see his full coloring, and then we can be sure. It'll be interesting to see if his colors brighten up any once he's settled into another tank.

he looks happy swimming in the 135g and is swimming in the middle with all the fish, not isolating at all. he is definitely in the Aulonocara jacobfreibergi family. looks very similar to my Aulonocara jacobfreibergi swallowtail, but instead of yellow fins, they are orange. his body is starting to brighten up a little. i am thinking it is a Aulonocara jacobfreibergi Hongi.
