  • Pool filter sand or Aragonite?

setting up a tanganyikan community tank and was wondering if PFS or the fine Aragonite would be better? Its been awhile for me. I have enough high PH rocks to bring up the PH if I used PFS. Just wanted some opinions. Thanks.

Either would work, since you have aragonite already why not use it? With the tap water we have it's not that critical.

only thing I dont like is that you say its 'fine' . fine sand gets blown around easily and I would rather go with PFS if pH is not a problem.

Aragonite. In my experience, it settles pretty quick.

I'll trade you PFS for your aragonite.

If you have it, might as well use it.

+1 didn't think there would be much question about it. Seems pretty obvious.

I use the Aragonite Select in my 180g wc moba tank. Have used it for over 5 years now. I use 2 6080 Tunze Streams to gently sweep all the fish poop and uneaten food to my twin 2217 eheims located at either end of my 6 foot tank. These are some powerful pumps that automatically turn on 4x daily for 15 minute cycles (8am, noon, 5pm, 12:30am).

The Aragonite Select is the next size up from the Aragamax which is the sugary sand smaller size used alot by saltwater reefers.

My pH hovers between 8.3 and 8.5 using the Aragonite Select, Texas Holey Rock and the cichlid buffer recipe (baking soda, epsom salt and Instant Ocean).

PFS is good sand as well and less expensive.
180g Oceanic w/colony of 8 WC Moba Fronts (1m/7f) purchased from TNT Cichlids in Jan '05 & numerous fry. 1 F1 adult moba male. 2 2217 Eheims, 2 6080 Tunze Streams, WISA airpump, single stage Johnson ETC.....fishkeeping since 1988.

Imo, aragonite is the superior choise. At the least for tangs, considering the parameters of the water they are from. Any fish keeping done well should be centered around all environmental conditions of the home waters of the fish! Understanding changes are ok but they can effect your fishes' health and demeanor.
