+1 on doing your research. You don't want to throw money down the drain... literally
If I were you, I'd start off with a colony of f1's. Should be a little more hardier than WC's. Try to find adult F1's so you don't get tired of them too quickly.300g - Petrochromis Texas "Red Fin" Longola, Petrochromis Red Bulu, Tropheus Red Rainbow Kansanga.

I don't really believe in getting into something just because it could be rewarding in a financial sense. With fish, I say get something you like. I prefer the less common ones and my favorite variants are the Brichardi. I ordered some F1 Canary Cheeks from an outside source, because I couldn't find any locally. Have had them for about a month or so, and I lost one the other day. I always thought people who were hoarding fish were being stingy, but I see why it's important to build the colony to a self sustaining number. My original plan was to raise these up to adults, let them breed and sell the babies, but I would like for my number to get to at least 30 or 40 before Im comfortable selling them. My favorite trophs in no particular order are Canary Cheek, Namansi Reef, Red Kachese, Mtoto, and Malagarasi. Goodluck210gPetrochromis Macrognatus Green 'Nsumbu

Being a first time Tropheus keeper was frustrating as hell.
I had perfect water, crazy over filtration, fed great food, weekly water changes. They started spawning next thing you know they got super aggressive and killed off the females 1 by 1 then the males. I started out with 26 now I have 1 big *** male...
Only lost 1 to bloat. Which I cured him of but a cheapo heater overheated the water and fried him.
I rearranged the rocks over and over but it was only a temporary fix and caused stress to them. So annoying. Tank was 125g with fossil wood.Last edited by e92htx; 03-28-2012, 06:11 PM.

One thing you ALWAYS wanna make sure you do is not try to rush water changes and ALWAYS check the temperature. My first colony of trophs were Red Kachese and I was on my way to church. Was gonna be busy the rest of the week and I really needed to do a water change. It had to be 30 degrees out side. I just turned both knobs the same as I always did and started filling the tank up. Water temp dropped from 78 to less than 60. Needless to say, I lost almost half my colony. Bought some more and the rest died due to a house fire.210gPetrochromis Macrognatus Green 'Nsumbu
