Thanks to all, I love this thread. I must add, if it is natural for the uv to be there then why not, I don't buy in! My favorite size tank is my main tank in the living room. 96"X36"X24" ( plenty big for anything I want ) not sure but it could probably rear an arrowana, any comments on this? Anyway its my favorite size and I can reach the bottom. It is filtered right now by One 2262 with a side pardner of one fx5 that has my carbon and renew inside for regular maintanence. My 2262 has 16 lts of ehiem substrate pro. My water is fine. About 30-40 petrochromis + at least 100 and more other fish. I'm happy with it and my fish seem to be also.I live for tangs@

I'm not exactly sure what you are saying about the UV above. UV is a natural thing. Every sunrise. If you leave a clear glass or plastic container of water out in the sun all day--the UV exposure will make the water safer to drink. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_water_disinfection There is no question that UV works. It can act as a water clarifier by killing off algae in the water column, or to reduce the amount of suspended biologicals in the water. It won't kill every noxious bug in your tank but it can sharply reduce their numbers if you have enough dwell time/slow enough flow, a reasonably fresh bulb, and a rig of sufficient wattage for the size of the tank. Whether it is needed or the best method for a certain desired outcome is the part that is open for discussion. My opinion is that it is a good tool to have in the tool box, and that multi-pronged approaches to problem solving/disaster mitigation (starting with preventative measures and ongoing maintenance) increase the probability that you'll over come, or never have certain problems. I'm playing with the idea of picking up a UV rig and maybe the smallest Maxi-Jet power head to jury rig up something to have on hand to use on a hospital tank as needed. Anyone with tips/ideas on the details how to best plumb that please let me know. While I'm not reef ready, I am salt ernate lifestyle curious...

Lol. Maybe they are passed on from one Fish box member to the next fish box member. I bought my 240 gallon 8 foot long tank from a local member for $400. Someone is selling a 340 gallon right now on here.240 and 35 Cichlid tanks

My tank was ordered through fishtanks direct and was going to be a tenacore but the time for them was slower than suncoast of florida so I opted for them it cost right at two thousand(just tank) I made the stand and am going to build the canopy. Tank is acrylic. I'll never have this large of a tank made of glass. Too heavy for me to move around. This one isn't and its 350 gals. The uv is in my opinion a good tool for treatment if needed, I just don't see the need for it regularly. I want algae in my tank(my fish are big on it) My goal for this tank in the end is to control with a neptune system!
My new avatar is one of the best pictures that I have of my tank so far.Last edited by waterdog; 04-18-2012, 04:37 PM.I live for tangs@
