Shell dwellers in your tank

So I decided I want to switch out my sea shells today and replace them with whale eye shells. As I took out one by one I noticed ALL of them smelled like something died in it. Hahah it smelled like something died in it!!!! Have anyone ever had this experience?!? All my fish are healthy and they're all alive.

Gas pockets, gotta use shells with minimal twist escargot, whale eye, muffin, neothauma, etc.
