  • FRONTOSAS: Help me pick out fish for my 125 gallon!

I need help picking out some fish for my new 125 gallon tank. I would like to make it a Mpimbwe Frontosa tank but I need some ideas for other fish that are compatible. I would like to have a Goby Cichlid (love those little guys) or two. I am open to suggestions for other stock. I really wanted Shell Dwellers and Cyps but I read that Frontosas will eat both of those. I have thought about Pictus Catfish. Will they go with Fronts? What are some more options for me? Thanks all!

I hear that Fronts chew on cyps as a natural food source in the wild so having some larger cyps would be the best bet. I've never had success breeding fronts and they are pretty boring so goodluck with that.

Throw in some syno petricola! , And so long as the fronts arent HUGE, a lil shelli colony wil be fine. Provided they have shells to escape too. Gobies are awesome. But they can be somewhat aggressive if u get afew males.

How many frontosa do you intend to have?? in a 125 there is no reason why you couldnt have a few Goby cichlids as well, they are from the same lake, so your chemistry should be easy, and both should thrive.

Eretmodus should work very well and there are some from the same collection point. Cyps are the natural food source for Frontosa in the wild and will eventually be eaten or stressed around large Fronts. Some of the larger shellies could work, hecqui and Telmatochromis come to mind. Larger Alto's could work, as well as julies if you do not go for gobies. There is quite a collection of catfish from the lake, from dwarf giraffe cats to a collection of different syno's. Multipuncts or Petricolas would work, but there are a few larger ones that can be acquired. Look over Daves Rare fish as he has quite a selection of different species and is very great about listing collection points. He is out of San Antonio, but shipping is fast and not very expensive. Occasionally he gets down to some of the auctions as well and will bring things if asked.

If you want your Fronts to truly thrive...keep em alone. Trust me, I've had Fronts for 4 years now and I've kept em with Juli's, Brichardi, Leleupi...you name it, I've probably kept it and they all disturbed the Fronts. Petricola cats and Alto Calvus make good tank mates. Gobies should be fine as well. Good luck with your new tank. If you have any questions about aquascaping for Frontosas, let me know. I have it down to a science. Lol

I guess whats really the thing going is are u trying for a species only tank with just the fronts , or would something like a tang community suit you more. Either wait itll be cool. Id say frontosarx is guy to ask in reguads to them alone. But iv have done the tang community setup for years as well.
