Replaced the substrate today and man does it make a difference!!!!! these guys are glowing now!

Still need to make my way out to KatyPond's place to get some more of those rocks and replace the background but you get the idea. the hanging wires and heater on front glass was just to get the tank warm again...they will be removed and the glass will be wiped clean of sand dust.

Well they are there now....I have had them for so long and every time I try and sell them it doesn't work out so whatever happens happens.

The sand I used is Eco-Complete cichlid substrate which I got a killer deal on through a small bulk buy....

I think that is the same stuff i have, but mine was original made for saltwater.

Probably Indo-pacific sand....I like the Eco...buffers and keeps params nice and high like they like it and doesn't compact like PFS from what I have experienced.

Ek, what is the purpose of using black felt instead of the black sheet typically found on the backside of the coral backgrounds?  Does it give a different look?

i would assume that black felt wouldn't reflect light like the black plastic sheet would. Or, he just had black felt laying around and cut it to fit.

Well the coral background that was on this tank is about 14yrs old so that was way before they had the smarts to do a double sided background. Also the felt is super cheap....for about $6 you can cover two 6' tanks so that was another reason. Also I have the double blue/black background on my Ilangi tank and when I had  it on the black side it would reflect badly and would magnify any water spot or dirt on the back glass which I did not like.

I have the felt on there now and it's awesome!

I really like that look I am going to look into that substrate for the 135 I just set up this weekend. Did the black gravel  wash out the colors in the fronts? I wanted to black gravel or sand in the 135 for my tang tank but don't know if I should use a dark or light substrate. That tank looks awesome with that substrate!!
