If it were me, I'd let the wet/dry act as mech and bio filter and let the 2217 just act as bio filter. You can do that by putting a sponge over the intake to keep out debris. I'm a fan of clean water and multiple filters... you never know when one filter will fail.
On the purigen... I never used it. Water changes will remove tannins. Eventually your driftwood will stop releasing them.

I really like the river rock in my tank but I agree that there needs to be something taller. Do you know of any taller rocks that have the smooth look like the river rocks do?

That's a great idea to look at other front tank pics! I will do that this evening.

Do you think that my hob overflow will catch most of the debris if it is just siphoning from the very top? I figured the other filter would catch the stuff that the overflow wouldn't.

Has anyone had any experiences with the fluval 405? That one and the 2217 would fit through the front.

Iv used a 405. They are good, easy to maintain and like the media arrangement. You cant go wrong with two Ac 110s tho. Move a tome of water and super quiet once running. People may say theres a slight noise. But yes, once its ran a few moths you get a slime build up around the impeller and that quiets itand subdues the noise. Both are good. But ur canister is going to allow for much more media.
