  • Carbonate hardness for shell dwellers

I just tested my tank for GH/KH. GH is 0 DKH and KH is 6 dkh. How important is Carbonate hardness for Rift lake cichlids like shell dwellers?

GH needs to be something other than 0. GH isn't all that important in my book, but rift lakes have a pretty high GH. KH hsould be fine at that level. Some will say that it has to match almost exactly, but I've never seen that to be true. I would say shoot for a GH above 2 or 3, and a KH around 8 and you should be fine

ugh maybe I need to get water from the bybass before the water softener... Or just see how they handle it I don't really want to use any kind of buffers

You could always just add some Holey Rock or crushed coral/aragonite sand into the tank and it will naturally buffer. Bypassing the water softner will work just fine as well. Most TR tanganyikans are bred in our normal tap and they do perfectly. I have only heard of folks having issues with some WC fish and I have a feeling they might be from some of the harder Ph spots in the lake (9.6+)

At a KH of 6 your alkalynity is fine. I'd definitely have the GH higher. From the pre-softener numbers, I'd probably take the water from before the softener.

What do ya think should I just go ahead and change all the water at once or slowly add the harder water?

Are there any inhabitants in the tank yet?

With no inhabitants I would just change it all out

Alright did a 50 percent water change with the hard water...

The hardness readings are now GH 6dkh and KH 9dkh
