72G Cichlid tank - Heater recommendation

Hi Guys,

I need your help in choosing a good heater.

I tried 2 types (not together, one-after the other) and had to return them back since the desired temperature is not being maintained (78-79 F) in the tank.

Now it makes me think if something else is a problem, other than the heater itself.

Please advise.

It's hard to imagine a 200W heater can't hold that temp in your tank.

What's the procedure you use to set your heater and check temp?

a 200W heater should be able to maintain that temp with over 3 watts per gallon. i dont think that those are the best brands though, maybe they are poor examples of heaters.

If your temperature is over what you want, it's the weather. I don't use heater in the summer months and my water stays about 79.

+1 200w heater should definitely be enough even if the heater isn't a good quality one. What's the temp in your house?

Is it hotter than 78-79? Or cooler? Maybe you just got a defective one? Like everyone said a 200+watt on your tank is good. If you're really wanting to try something else maybe try the eheim jäger heaters. Those are pretty reliable.

I have a feeling the tank is above 80 degrees without the heater even turning on. The heater won't do much to fix that problem

My point exactly. Heaters only heat the water. They don't regulate it by dropping.

I have an aqueon 250w in my 125 and is a great heater
I love the on and off light, i know i need another since this one is for 90 g but likw it more that thw eheim that i have before .
