First off, what makes you think that sand won't work?

OK, now we can get some answers.

Getting some sand sucked in happens even if a filter is plumbed through the bottom or over the back glass. My FX5s which are plumbed over the back glass gets sand in them but have not had any adverse effects on the filter itself. Even HOB filters suck up sand if the intake is low enough, filter suction is strong enough or if you have fish that spray sand as part of their territorial "dance".

HOB filters can get very noisy if sand gets into the impeller area, and canisters for the most part have barriers against sand getting to the impeller.

You can plug the holes in the bottom by installing bulkheads and then capping them off.

Well I've been tinkering with it and I think I can set the intake higher in the tank so I think it will be good
