Here are a few sites I have found
    General Info on Spiny eels
    Peacock Spiny eel Breeding
    Tanganyikan eel Egg Laying
    Spiny eel Reproduction FAQ

I had a difficult time locating info previously and found some useful search keys to try that garnered different results.
Afromastacembelus and Aethiomastacembelus were both older genus names for the African branches, they have since been reclassified back into the main branch of the family. Many sites and persons continue to use their older family names and even exporters are not familiar with their current latin names and classifications. Even searching 'Spiny eel' gets different results as many are unaware or mispell the genus names so badly they are literally unsearchable. Hope this offers some hope and ideas.

I myself have overlooked Asiatic Spiny Eels and their reproduction appears to be tied to monsoon seasons. Thus heavy soft water changes and possibly minor electrical changes in water chemistry trigger breeding in most accounts. The lack of breeding in aquarium settings is in my opinion less to do with difficulty and far more to do with most folks not stocking densely enough (3-6 individuals at least on the hopes of getting 1 pair) and lack of space as these require large tanks to reach adulthood. Most accounts from the wild Asiatic species suggest an embrace of the adults. Given that info, I could see it being applied to the African members. Water parameters are very constant in the lake, so they should reproduce in a tank offering the lakes steady parameters. It could be possible that the rainy season triggers their spawn as well, even streams and inlets with a softer water inducing the adults to spawn. There are a few accounts of eggs being found in the sand near or under rocks in tanks, if so then they should spawn in a general tank enviroment. Group spawning has been observed in the wild with many Mastecembelid eels and could be found in the Tanganyikan species as well. Feeding and Lighting could also play a role, especially if they are a seasonal spawner. Try altering the lighting over a few months to reproduce a winter/summer shift and see if it does anything for them. Not sure what the trick is, but just a few different ideas that might yield results. Good Luck and crossing my fingers for you!

Thanks Roy, all good things to consider and take into thought. I would very much like to get about 6 of these eels and see if i cant get a pair to form. And yes a bigger tank eventually. But ill keep everyone up to date on their progress and post some new pictures up too!

Lol, not saying anything about your eels, more a case of general spiny eel knowledge then anything else. Most are deligated to 29 gallon tanks or less and there is one or possibly 2. Most of the larger species (Tiretrack & Fire eels) get crazy huge (36-48") and are just not realistic expectations for breeding in anything short of a zoo or pond. I think that the tangs are actually the most feasible breeding oppertunity in the family and could be done. Have you noticed any sexual characteristics in your two? Heaviness is about the only thing I have seen mentioned, but the females are nearly double the size of the male when holding eggs, so it should be noticable. The max I have seen on the ellipsifers is 18", so I imagine breeding size would be half that or a little more 9-12"...

Took a few pics the other night , been a while since iv posted on this thread. Figured i was due for an update. I need to make a feeding video of these guys when they eat. Its pretty cool to see them come out of the gravel and go crazy for the pellets. Not sure as to the sex of these yet but by observation and colors n such, id like to say that i got a male and female. One is significantly bigger then the other with coloring not as vibrant. So from research and readings its possible it could be a lrg female. The other has bright color bands and its not near as fat as the other one. And usually the males have better colors then females when it comes to sexing. Cant prove this information for sure.....but this is just what im noticing and taking notes on. Since i first got them they are MUCH bigger and very healthy. Quite active too!

Been talking with a few friends and very good friends on here, and i would love to get these bad boys to breed! Theres so many ideas and skeptical thoughts on what actually happens in the wild and how mating is triggered for these amazing animals. But iv got two and from the physical look and body visualization of the fish themselves it appears as tho i "may" have a male and female. Not certain! But since i brought them home they've nearly tripled in size, and personalities have shown too. Feeding is very good, and they arent shy when it comes time to feed.
