  • De-obing an ob peacock?

I just got a nice peacock that looks like its an ob mixed with a dragonsblood. What I'm wondering is if I line breed him with a strawberry female can I ever get rid of the less desirable ob trait? Has anyone here ever done this successfully?

    De-obing an ob peacock?

It depends on which fishes genetic traits are dominate. You wont get rid of it completely but you can lessen the chances of it showing many generations down the line.

If I had to guess I'd say the OB trait is dominant. Guess I'll see soon.

          De-obing an ob peacock?

After breeding, the best thing to do will be to cull out the undesired ones and raise the others to breeding size, then breed them with a different male/female, it will help remove the OB from genetics. But remember it won't get rid of it all.

If you learned about the punnett square back in school, line breeding is basically the same concept.

That's exactly correct. Forgot the name since that was 13 years ago. Cr@p I'm getting old.

Also, there is no way to actually "de-ob" an ob peacock. The only thing you can do is minimize the OB trait as much as possible after several generations of breeding and culling. Even then, the hand picked peacocks will still have that OB trait even though it's not visibly present and then if you were to breed that hand picked one, there is still a good chance you will get quite a few OB offspring because the OB trait is dominant (not sure if it's truly dominant, but that's what you said).

I figured that it cant be completely removed. This one has only a few spots. It appears to have been bred to remove some of the ob. I dont know if ob trait is dominant but I would guess so based on how much it is expressed in most cases.

Never really had an interest in peacocks because most of them were mutts and I've only seen a few nice ones.

I agree. I really dont like regular ob's especially considering they are a mixture of a peacock and a ob pseudo. Thats just plain wrong imo.

Yup. It gives them an ugly look too. It sure steered me away from keeping them.
