I usually boil a pot of water and pour it over the driftwood, just to be safe. It's unlikely anything is living in/on it, but if you are worried, you could do that.

Yea. Use boil water. Let it soak so some of that tanning leach out but if you don't mind the tanning then you don't have to soak

boil it if it hasnt been used in aquariums, but if it has it should be fine

Some aquarists like to know they are not transferring disease with driftwood and the recommendation is to boil water and douse it. Depending on your worries, the driftwood has likley been colonized by beneficial bacteria that will still likely be present (though far fewer) in the wood. As long as the original owner never had any issues or used strange medications in the tank I would simply rinse it and you should be fine.

+1 Also some driftwood doesn't sink immediately if it's been sitting out and long dried. Boiling will kill off any foreign substances and allow it to sink.

So I could put it in my sous vide machine and pasteurize it.

worst thing driftwood ever did in my tanks was grow white fuzzy stuff on it, which went away on its own over time and was actually fairly interesting in its own right since it seemed harmless. oh, and turn the water red. purigen can clear this if you don't like it.
