Most of the time I have it low cause I use small feedings with other kind of fish petros and Trophs is hard cause the amount of them and to make them all eat

    I do water changes weekly about+ 75%

And a lot of diff media in HOB and canister and lot of flow
Even where the water go out on the HOB I have media lol

But man Sunny is trying to help u out he ask u something and you get mad ? He wanna know cause u almost always are gonna have nitrate the end of the process all go down to the amount of waste and bacteria and feeding again with a few fish in a 125 before I did a WC it was reading 0 only one week 5 small feeding won't build enough nitrate

No plants. I told you I have low feeding rates. I told you I stop feeding altogether for changes....

I said it wan't always 0 and fluctuates but was today when you asked.......

Since you are not specifying nitrate or nitrite your lack of specificity isn't encouraging for this discussion to move forward in a productive fashion. And more specifically I don't think I could help you understand how to keep a near 0 nitrate aquarium...

I call BS. I know you have great tanks. I think you are playing with me.....
Seriously. I think you're taking this the wrong way. And to be clear, I was very specific on asking about nitrates.

I had a period where I was getting zero or close to zero nitrates when I tested as well but I was skeptical and found out that the kit I was using was giving me a false reading close to zero. Turns out I had about 40 - 60 ppm. All I was leading towards was suggesting you use another test kit, or even a test strip, to double check your nitrate readings.

I saw a red flag when you mentioned that you do 15% - 25% weekly water changes. With that small a water change, I can see nitrates building up over the few months you've been keeping these fish to a level that can cause your pH to crash. This is a very viable outcome if your test kit is giving you a false nitrate level reading and couple that with temp fluctuations your fish are gonna get sick quick.

That's what I was leading at and only trying to get you to look at another possible issue. I'm amused that you got your panties in a bunch over that. Don't be so defensive.

That might be true, but that's no way of feeding Trophs to get them in breeding condition. Regardless of how low your nitrates are, breeding is gonna slow way down, and can stop, if you don't feed them enough.

Fair enough Sunny. I was pretty upset yesterday and my friend Johnny Walker didn't help.

The cause: The kids took some of the turtle tank "rocks" (not aquarium safe) and put them in the tank. When I pulled them out they were crumbling in my hand - doh......

9 troph survivors - all look good today.

Ok. I'll type something up about how I manage the cycle.

Thanks to everyone who responded. And Sunny, your nitrate post did prompt me to test PH ( I had skipped it ). Lot's of work over the past day or so to clean it all up.

Awww man, been sick and I haven't had time to read stuff for days..............just saw your crisis! I'm so sorry for your loss.........losing trophs will drive you crazy very quickly. Sorry I wasn't around to offer support. Yep, your beautiful setup right next to the stairway was just asking for trouble if uncovered with kiddos! Ugh............turtle tank stuff...........I have turtles and even with the best of setups, it's still a turtle tank with all those particulars......I can only imagine what was introduced to your troph tank! And the temp flunctuations....it got pretty chilly in my neck of the woods over past couple of weeks - heaters are a must here.

On a side note, my 23 year old son is temporarily staying with me right now and I have 3 tanks in that room......same story only older.....discovered he'd been burning incense on the glass on top of the tank that was in the room he's using and blowing them off - ashes were everywhere and the glass only covers 3/4 of tank surface.....need I say more????? I had already found pizza crust in another tank ............and he's 23!!!! Right now, good fish moved, currently keep $1 Petsmart sale tropicals in there just to keep the tanks running until he moves.............
                          Thanks so much,
                          Lydia
