Honestly for my large group I'm planning to get bemba orange flames but for this little group I'm thinking dubs and the smae group is kinda for my own personal gratification, but am looking for ideas for what sp. to use

He wants to know if he can breed the 6 he has to get enough fry to start a colony. As far as aggression, what tropheus species to use to dither the aggression.

So question since we have decided that this would be a difficult task if you all where to attempt to grow a colony from six fish what variant would you use?

              Re: Starting a colony

It might be, but you won't know till you get them and see what happens. The risk is always there. Also, it will be time consuming since it takes then about 12 - 16 months to start breeding from being spit.

The variant to grow out is personal preference. like you said if you were to get a BIG colony you would get Bemba flametails. Why don't you get that first and get the smaller group in a diff variant so no cross breeding is going to happen. Your problem is resolved!!!

+1 i agree with coung, most variants will be aggressive if kept in small numbers some will be more than others. If your looking to start a colony of tropheus do it right so you wont lose any fish while having a small colony. But becareful WC fish are very hard to take care of at first, they can be sick and star dying one by one then your money will go down the toilet. At the same time it also depends who you get them from, if your looking for bemba greg at LAA has some very nice ratio but also very expensive.

I can tell you this from personal experience when i first started to keep tropheus i had a colony of 12 chimbas, whitin a month it was down to 5 because of a dominant male killing the rest. I went online and read all about them and then bought 20 WC chaitika from greg and didnt loose 1, then i added 20 from thai and 20 more from suelovesfish. To this day i happy to have a conlony that big, no agression whatsoever and they breed like crazy. In the end if your going to do a colony do it right from the get go so you wont have headaches later..
                  175 tropheus Chaitika
                  125 tropheus Ujiji
                  90 tropheus Nkonde
