  • Hybrid malawi's ???

I have a 100 gallon with 2 leleupi's,2 compressiceps, 2 dubosi, 4 malawi peacocks, 2 labidochromis, 1 demosoni, L200 (green phantom), 1 synodontis eupterus feather fin squeaker,& nimbochromis venustus. I am wandering if these malawi's will cross breed do to I do have females and males. I originally wanted them to breed but now I am against it and wanting to know if I should remove the females considering the fact they aren't as good looking as the males. And I would like to know how to tell the difference between in sex of my leleupi's and autolamps compressiceps.

Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

May be my ignorance but doesn't seem that you have enough fish to worry about cross breeding. Peacocks won't breed with comps or leluipi. Demasoni shouldn't breed with peacocks. What are you concerned with?

Edit: I missed the labs. Yeah you might wanna worry. I would remove the labs.

What type of peacocks do you have? There are so many out there. I have done quite a bit of reading on the internet before I started my malawi tank build. I have a mix of males and females in the tank and am confident that hybridization will not occur because of my stock. The one thing I came across the most of was the fish with similar looking females will most likely interbreed unless a large enough ratio of females to males is present. In the wild the fish rarely interbreed because of the abundance of their own kind. When they are in an aquarium that has limited potential they will breed with others. So if you have two different male peacocks and a female for each one and if the females look the same then they could potentially interbreed. The labs won't interbreed with the peacocks or the venustus I doubt the demosoni will try to interbreed with your labs. Regardless of all that I would say (just my opinion) that your ratio of male to female is not conducive for healthy female cichlids. If you don't want any breeding to occur at all then yes of course you need to remove the females. If you are not planning on getting more females for your males I would recommend removing the females also so they do not get chased to death by horny males.

I don't see any of these fish interbreeding with one another but they will most likely breed at some point. If you don't want babies take out the females.

Well they can breed Im not really worried as long as they dont cross breed. I honestly dont believe that the fry would survive as I have the 2 compressiceps & 2 leleupi's being fry eaters and the synodontis might also consume some as well. I just really dnt want mutts on the unlikely chance that they survive.

I had some ahlis and some peacocks and lost my female ahli and the male ahli bred with my female peacock. The ahlicocks I raised up were some of the prettiest you will ever see.
