Re: 300 gallon tank & occupants

I'm really not too sure how it is done just yet. My tank is acrylic and I am aware that there are acrylic kits available to remove scratches. I don't have any experience with this just yet. But I will soon. :)

Re: 300 gallon tank & occupants

A year or so back I was house sitting for a friend and they had a 55 acrylic hex tower in the garage. I thought it was an interesting dimension, so I decided to set it up for the time being. The tank was covered in scratches so I took it outside and tried to scrub it off with an acrylic algae pad. It worked to a certain extent, but you could still see the larger ones. So, I reluctantly tried scrubbing the whole thing down with CLR. Success! This was the first time I'd ever used a kitchen cleaner to clean a tank out. I know most hobbyist wouldn't advise it, but it took away all the large scratches. If your looking at the tank a few inches or so you could still see the remnants of the scratch, but from a further distance the tank looked virtually new. After rinsing it out thoroughly for 45 minutes or so I filled it up and a few days later added fish. I threw in 3 misc. pseudo's and none of them ever died! I know your tank is a much larger volume than the tank I worked with, but if your acrylic kit doesn't work out for you, you should give this a shot, maybe on specific areas?

      Just my .02 cents

      Good luck,

At work we wet sand headlights all the time...though not acrylic but plastic(somewhat similar) and it works! I have even done DVD's and CD's at work.

Take it slow and try not to force it too much is what I have learned through overheating and breaking many CD's

lightly wet sand the scratches with some 2000grit sand paper or higher and i like to use the RYOBI buffing compund from home depot. works like wonder on acrylics

            thanks, ek and honkzz.

There are some excellent instructions in DIY section of www.monsterfishkeepers.com that are very similar to what you both said. :)

I haven't messed with the tank at all. But I have added a silver arowana and a ornate bichir. :) Oh, I gave the Myersi to my neighbor and I kept the redtail catfish. :)

I still need to have a "venting" party. I have actually been thinking about that a lot. Will decide on something soon. :)
