yellow lab female ate fry?

do females ever eat their fry? a couple weeks ago when they were released i counted 10. there are plenty of hiding spaces in the tank so i usually don't see many of them. i haven't taken the female out yet but removed all the objects yesterday to clean the tank and there were only 4 fry left. the filter's protected so they didn't get sucked up. just curious. thanks.

for mouth broaders, it's normal for the female to scoop up the fry in her mouth if she feels threatened, sometimes swallowing the fry without realizing it, or mistaking them for food. i had a trio of dubiosi's that bred a few times and the female always swallowed them. there also may be a predator in your tank eating these guys for lunch.

Any fish in the tank can become opportunist.

it's definitely her. i moved her to a new tank before she released. i don't have a third for her and i don't want to move her back to the main tank yet... don't want any more batches to give away. looked this morning and there's only one fry left. yuck.
