  • African photoperiod

What does everyone set their photo periods to? I'm trying to grow a small amount of algae both for food and a more natural look, but can't seem to get it to grow, even diatoms in a new tank.

    I'm running two T5s on a 55 gallon for 9 hours a day.

You think the two BN plecos could eradicate all the algae even with feeding?

that seems a long photoperiod. How long has the tank been set up

It takes some time, increase the photoperiod to make up for the lack of light.

I'm guessing the T5s fit on the tank so 2x39w? Normal output?

Tank has been setup for about a month now, I'm running two T5s normal bulbs in a HO fixture at the moment.

I've been slowly moving it from 6 hours, to now 9, I guess I'll keep pushing it up... Was just wondering what others do.

I'm also changing 25% water, every other day. This probably is preventing bba. Bba an issue in cichlid tanks?

Btw this is my first time using the aqueon python changer, and holy ****, it almost makes changing water fun.

          Why would you want BBA?

Well I don't really, but seeing something is better than nothing. My tank looks so sterile, I guess I'll just give it more time.

              Re: African photoperiod

BBA is not the same as diatom algae (what I think you're referring to).

                We've got our Tangs on a 12 hr photo period....it's like 30 watts on a 30g long.

Yeah, total game-changer. I love mine.
