  • Good live food for cichlids?

I have a spare 10 gallon tank and Im thinking of raising something to feed to my cichlids. I've never done anything like this before, so I'm hoping to get some direction. Whats the best for them? What do you do? Any ideas, or suggestions are appreciated!

Not sure why you want to feed those fish high protein diets. Bloat is actually "Malawi Bloat". Those fish don't have larger mouths like carnivorous fish so I would use something small. Actually mosquito larvae might be a good option if you can quarantine them. Other than that, I would use ghost or grass shrimp.

If you're looking for live food that will reproduce in that 10gal I would suggest Red Cherry Shrimp. They breed like roaches and are small enough for those cichlids to eat.

+1 on protein bit. You usually want to stray away from high protein foods with Malawi cichlids. They usually end up with "Malawi Bloat" when fed high protein foods. I wouldn't do ghost shrimp since they need brackish/saltwater to reproduce or our ditches for some reason.

Red cherry shrimp is easy to keep, breed, and maintain. They're usually .50-2.00 each. I wouldn't pay more than $1 each.

Honestly, catch some of those big mosquito hawks that are flying around right now and throw them in the tank. They love that!
