Re: Does some of their color come with age?
I think it's a combination of diet and water conditions, and their tank mates have some thing to do with it too. If there are a few of them, one will most likely display his colors to the others.
CFTruth is the cement that holds the bricks and stones of a sane and civilized society together. Remove the former and the latter will crumble.

Good point. It's the male that I would like to color up a little, though, and you can't have more than one male in a 55g... He already kicked the other one out that I had in there ;-)
I give them food with a carotenoid in it & try to give them frozen food (bloodworm, shrimp) as well (not every day, but frequently). I am hoping that will help.

Re: Does some of their color come with age?
I have fed all my fish NLS......
It does wonders! The best example though is probably with the Celestial Pearl Danios....when they were coming in they had sunken stomachs....no color at all other then a fade of reddish brown and gray. A lot of them came in really poor condition and if you ever seen some in the LFS they never resembled the pictures you see online which makes you think that those pictures are photoshopped.....well here is what those horrible looking CPD's looked like after a few months of nothing but NLS.
Female
These shrimp get fed NLS...
Some Embers....these I got from Fish Gallery...if you see them there you will notice that mine are a nice orange red while the ones that are still there are yellow white.
about a few weeks a month after I got them on NLS
Now
700g Mini-Monster tank

Re: Does some of their color come with age?
It is sinking to the bottom SO quickly, like instantly... My fish are not getting much of it because of that. I'm sure they pick some off of the ground later, but they are used to their food sinking more slowly- giving them more time to eat it before it hits the ground. My female comes out from behind the rocks when she smells the food, but if it's more than 3 seconds the food is already on the ground & she's looking around the water for it. Any suggestions??

I bought the smallest pellet from NLS and it sinks very slowly, most of it floats on the surface when there is little surface agitaion. I have an Aquaclear 20 on that tank and I turn down the flow rate when feeding so that the food does not sink faster. Here is a link to the food I bought. the pellets are very small.
