I plan to make a more permanent DIY carbon bottle. I'll do a write up on that when I make it. I have a reactor I was thinking about rigging into a carbon bottle, but decided not to. If anyone wants to attempt it, I'll let the reactor go for $30. Will be posted in market later tonight.

I don't recall anyone saying big carbon tanks needing to be drained. Smaller ones yes because they're much smaller and fouls much faster.

Here's some useful info about carbon. This is why draining big carbon bottles isn't necessary. It'll prolong the life of the carbon in it, but not needed because of how much carbon is in such large bottles.

I'm not sure how practical it would be due to the need for it to be above the tank to work properly but I'm curious how well converting a wetdry from bioballs to carbon would work. Extra oxygenation, leaves the carbon dry after use, and the trickle effect should increase contact time.

Huh? Carbon bottles don't need to be above the tank.

Carbon bottle, no. I'm thinking if you set up a wetdry with carbon it would need to be above the tank unless you can match the hose flow rate to your return pump rate really well.

Stephen made this for me a while back and I love it. I would suggest getting an o ring and placing it at the opening so you you will not have any water leaking. I inherited a carbon snake a few weeks ago and I will be using both when I do my next water change. These are the next best to a carbon bottle. I will gradute later on down the road.

Yup, but I made a double one for you. My little contraption is like a base-line filter. A carbon snake or carbon bottle will definitely run better, but will cost a bit more.

A good carbon filter and Safe will make you rubberized and bazooka proof...LOL

I did not realize the water here was like that. I'm new to the area from Tampa Florida and the guy at the lfs just told me its high in ph, and perfect for cichlids. Kinda spooks me.

Nothing really to be worried about. Just take preventive measures. Like John said...
