  • QUESTION: filtration for 29 gallon tank

Just a quick question on what type of filtration I should use for a 29 gallon tank.
    Tank dimension: 30Lx12Wx18H
Inhabitant: a pair of breeding Leulepi
Please advise me on what kind of filter you are using and please be specific (brand, size).

For a 30g, I'd do an AquaClear 50, 70, or 110 if you want a HOB. For a canister, I'd recommend an Eheim Classic 2213 or 2215. A wet/dry filter is by far my favorite type of filter. Any brand will do. Even a DIY wet/dry could work and should run about $30-40 and $60-70 at most for filtration on a 30g tank. If you need help making a DIY wet/dry, I could help guide you. There are also internal filters (the ones that sit inside the tank), but IMO they're better on smaller tanks (20G and under) or turtle tanks. You could do a sponge filter as well if you wanted to go that route.

I read good review on AC110. Do you think it might be too much flow for a 29 gallon?

There ir not such a thing as over filtration! The more the better. Just be careful in the aspect of the water flow. Not all fish like high or slow flow

For leulepi? It shouldn't be too much flow. If it does happen to be too much flow, that can easily be remedied with a prefilter sponge. That way you get to keep the huge media chamber.

An Ac110 is a lot of filter for just a 29. In my opinion, a 70 will do the job just fine so long as ur on top of water changes and upkeep of the filter. For the Leleupi they dont need huge flow rates. Personally tho if your going to do a power filter, id strongly recommend putting a sponge over the intake to prevent fry lose.

Thanks for your advice Gents. AC70 it is (with a sponge). For media, would you recommend something else or just use what is included?

+1 I would go with this route. good for fry and have room for a bunch of media, and if you plan on upgrading it will fork for larger tanks also. If im not mistaken i think flow rate is somwhere close to 500gph.

Plus AC110 resell more easily if you ever want to ditch it.

Use what's included, but toss the carbon. Buy 100ml purigen to replace the carbon or buy another pack of biomax.
