Should not have any problems running a sponge filter on a sand bed. Are you going to be using an air pump to run the filter?

I guess. The air pump is not included with the Sponge filter?

You can use the sponge filter anywhere . You will need to add an air pump and some tubing in order for the sponge filter to as a filter . Just connect the tubing to the outlet on the air pump and then connect the other end of the tubing to the grey center piece of the Hydro sponge filter .

Most times, no. Sponge filter with sand will work. There shouldn't be a reason why it wouldn't. Just get an air pump, tubing, and then stick the air tube into the sponge filter tube.

No it is not. In the past I have connected sponge filters to powerheads, so that is why I asked.

I've used my sponge filter with both a power head and a regular air pump. Only thing i can call a problem is my cichlids dig sand out from under it and try to tip it.
