Go to garden rock sale place where they will sell you rocks and stone supply store.
      like www.katystone.com
I would not use tile from Home depot as you are going to nailed with a high cost stone that you dont need to pay.. save the money and goto a small quarry or garding rock sales and pick up 50 lbs for like $10.00

Hit some of those tile stores and/or tile outlet stores and ask if they will let you pick through their broken tiles.  Make sure you get real slate tho, and not ceramic tile.  Sometimes they'll just let you have it for nothing.  It could be that when I told the saleslady it was to make my fishies little caves so they'd be happier, she might have said I could just take them to get the 'weirdo' out of the store  :).  she even had the guy there load them in my truck for me!

Ooh, great idea!  We're about to update our bathroom, including re-tiling the floor and shower so we'll already be visiting tile stores.  Maybe if we buy some for our renovation they'll throw in some broken slate for free!
