  • 225g home show tank build

Just came across a great deal on a 6ft 225gallon Oceanic tank. The tank was bought new 2 years ago and filled with water but never had any fish in it so there are no scratches or imperfections. As part of the deal I got a powder coated steal frame stand and canopy that, Eheim Pro 3 with all media baskets full, Aquatic Life 6ft T5 HO 8 lamp with lunar light, 400lbs of Eco-complete planted aquarium substrate(still in sealed bags), big pieces of driftwood, and other misc items.

Setup is almost complete as-is but I will need to add coverings for the stand and canopy, and I plan to add at least one more filter to tank. For the stand cover I plan to incorporate Brown leather and hair-on cowhide instead of doing fancy wood molding. Should be original looking, but hopefully it looks good. I have an Fx5 laying around that I will probably use but I would like to find a way to cover the inlet tubes for both filters. I am also not sure if I am going to used the plant substrate since I don't plan to have live plants.

Since I am not doing a wet-dry on this tank I will need an air pump but could use some advice on which would be a good choice for this size tank and will also be quiet enough for my living room.

I have not completely decided on the fish selection yet. I have been wanting to do petros or possibly trophs for a while but I am afraid that I don't have sufficient time to take care of them if an aggression or sick issue arises. In my experience Fronts, Haps, and Peacocks seems to be extremely easy to keep as long as water quality is good.

Here are some bad pics of what I brought home. Will get more soon

Each of the small boxes are filled with 2 or 3 bags of sealed plant gravel.

This is the gravel. They may all end up for sale so PM if your interested.

Another crappy pic and quick question. This tank will be in a room with carpet. If it ends up not being level should I put the shims between the stand and carpet, between metal stand and board under tank, or between tank and board on top of the stand? Normally I would do it between the floor and stand but not sure if the carpet makes a difference. The previous owner had the shims between the stand and support board that the tank sat on(seen below).

I've always done shims on the floor if unlevel..... Nice pick up and I'd be interested in some of the eco-complete if you sell

I like that tank Ryan. I saw do what you want to do and let things take care of themselves. You'll find time to take care of things if need be.

Wife and I got impatient waiting on a friend to come help us move the tank and damn near broke it twice. No drops but some close near misses. Got it all the way to the stand on 2 4-wheel dolly but she can't lift it high enough to get it on the stand so now we wait.
