  • Nyererie tank mate question

I have been told that Haplochromis sp. "#44" thickskin are a good tank mate for my Lake Victorian Nyererie but I am also looking for other ideas.

Does anyone have any other options for tank mates for my little Lake Victoria Nyererie friends?

    Thanks :)

2 others I have heard "play well" are zebra obliquens and rock kribensis but I don't think I have ever seen them in LFS or for sale by anyone so they may not be easy to find.

Im going t stick with my sp44 recommendation due to how aggressive nyererei can get. Sp44s are haps and get much larger. This is an old video, about 2.5 years ago of my original Nyererei male. Video was right after I tossed the male nyererei back into a sp44 colony (that includes a solid 7" sp44 male). Fast forward to the 4min mark. It's a fishy David vs. Goliath. It's like hes herding sheep by the end and SP44s are no joke when it comes to aggression either. Yes, it varies from male to male. My last breeder male was a "good" fish, gave the males a good thump from time to time, nothing like this, but it can happen.

Jason at fish r us always has them. He probably calls them red tail hap. He's a big victorian guy, so he generally has a good selection of them

I checked with Fish R Us and they want $15.00 for a 3".. That is way to pricey in my book. I will just wait and see if any juvi's show up here on HFB.

Andrew.. I just wanted to give you an update on the Nyereie... They are doing great! They seem to love their new home and of the males, 1 has set up shop as the Alpha already. His colors are just amazing too I might add :) The females swoon as he swims by and the slightly smaller males give him a wide path and those that do not show respect, get schooled...lol
