  • Losing fry after free-swimming

    Hi all.
Im a very experienced fish-keeper (Tropheus, Petros, South Americans etc).

    Quite mystified here!!!

I have a bunch of very rapidly breeding Lab. Hongi.
I have lost 3 batches in a row, shortly after becoming free-swimming (may just a a touch of egg left) within the tumbler.

Water is good, temperature is good, oxygenation is good and the tumbler is not overly active.

    Ideas?

    David

One of our members had an issue with chemicals from the fry tank leaching into the water and killing his fry. Have you used this tank for fry before?

With breeding in my personal experience its best to keep newly hatched fry in the origanal tank water that they were first born into. Moving them may cause deaths as i have noticed at times. But if u grow them out to a certain size you can move to a new tank. Just use the same tank water they were born in and ur good!
5 gal baby hecqui grow out
        7 gal baby compressicps
        14 bio cube fry tank, multies-orange leleupi-telmatochromis
        4 tank rack- 30 cubes. Shellies, mulities-brevis-telmatochromis-caudopunctaus
        100 gal mixed community tank
        125 Tropheus black bembas

        Tanngankia cichlids what else

If they made it to free-swimming, I can't see how the water would be an issue... Unless the tumblers are in a different tank than the ones the free-swimming fry are in.

            Hi all,

            Thanks for the advice.

Water parameters are ph 8. Same water as breeding tank.

This tank has been used as a recovery tank before. I suspect there is a pathogen in the tank.
As i have just lost the final batch, i have emptied the tank and will completely bleach and rinse the tank before reuse.

Real pity. Ive lost about 100 fry in the time i have had the breeding colony. Im getting about 3 batches a week however, so should be back in business shortly.

            Cheers all

            David

Still a bit of a mystery.

Happened to me a while back. Had to completely replace the tank to halt the problem.

Yep. I was referencing your experience in my first post.
