It looks like Diatoms (brown algae), could be dust and particles from the bio media. Did you rinse it prior to starting? If it is not seasoned yet I'd just rinse it all or save the bio and rinse in a bucket of treated tap while hosing off the rest. Might be that there is a thriving colony of diatoms in it. They can survive blackouts and only live off ambient room light. Bristlenose and snails love it...

Well cleaned the hoses out were pretty gunked up the pads didn't look to bad but the water in the canister was completely orange of orange dust. emptied it out power hosed everything but the media and I don't see any more dust particles coming out. uploadfromtaptalk1398555875296.jpguploadfromtaptalk1398555898006.jpg

If I've said it once. ..I'll say it again. The FX5 is a mechanical filtration beast.

when cleaning the only thing you DONT want tap water cleaned by is the bio media. That live and you just wana keep it in tank water when you service the filter. Everything else you cane rinse in tap and clean with no hassle, just be sure the bio stays live in tank water and you ok. but for sure id add in some pads or polishing pads to take out the carap and fine particles you see in the water.
