And you'd have to figure out a way to make your input, or the T section on the output, able to reach the bottom of the tank to clean sand/gravel

I was thinking to use the same principle as the water changer. Divert the canister flow from the tank to a hose going to a sink. Then, the discharge from the canister is pushing out water through the straight section of a tee. On the short arm (the one that is 90 degrees to the flow) I put a barb and connect a standard gravel vac.

Could I get enough suction through the gravel vac to clean? What dimestions would I need to pull a vacuum and not have a geyser? Where are the DIY gurus?

Hopefully a DIY guru will pop up soon, because we are quickly moving away from my area of expertise lol in theory, it sounds legitimate. The only thing I can see as a problem is your gravel vac needs to have a large diameter, like 2-3 inches. I'd recommend finding a cheap python simply for gravel vacuuming, then rig up the output on your canister just for draining the tank, and make a carbon filter with an rv hose for refilling. All aspects covered for less than or around $100

Unfortunately, I don't think you can tag people on here, or I would tag Hung Vo and Donovan Briant
