if you have not done alot of regular water changes and then start doing them on a regular basis this can cause it to happen too....but just add the prime and it will settle down in a couple of days.....but i might suggest that you have extra o2 into the tank via a sponge filter or air stone.....this will help them breathe better....i did this before so i know what your going thru...lol...

i have done same maintence all time. constant.  and i have airstones in all tanks just for extra surface agitation.  i just am dumbfounded what happend cause i have never had this hapen like this before.  im stumped

Is it possible that you cleaned all of the gravel and all hob filter pads at the same time?  Try cleaning half of the gravel and just one hob filter pad (assuming that there are more than one) at a water change.  On the next water change (two weeks/ month)do the other half of gravel and the other pad.  Sunrise

may want to check the born on date on your beer Keith!!!  
for real if your test kit is more than a couple years old you need to buy another, and forget the strips that you dip in the water they are not worth a $hit.

There are exceptions to every rule, but here is the general.

1- Fish Eats Food
2-Fish Poops Food (Biological Waste)
3-Poop (Biological Waste) turns into AMMONIA
4-Bacteria 1 will eat the Ammonia
5-Bacteria 1 will produce NITRITES
6-Bacteria 2 will eat the NITRITES
7-Bacteria 2 will produce NITRATES
8-NITRATES build up and will settle in the gravel
9-Water Change / Clean Gravel
10-NITRATES go down

Keith, my best guess would be that when you cleaned your gravel you released ALOT of the NITRATES. You mentioned that you did not do a very good job at cleaning your gravel. When you stir up your gravel all the NITRATES that are stored in the gravel gets released into the aquarium causing the NITRATE spike. A good way to avoid this happening is to move the gravel vac around in a uniform manner and to move it slow enough to where the cloud that does come up has enough time to get sucked back into the gravel vac. Its more tedious but will save you alot of frustration.

There are many different explanations for what "COULD" have gone wrong, and i'm not saying that this is the only logical reason. From my experience I would say that this is my best explanation on what caused the NITRATE spike from what I have read in the previous posts.

hey thanks all.  when i clean i do clean my filter pad and gravel at same time.  last time i vaccumed i didnt do gravel the greatest but did stir it.  dumb move.  but for the test its a new one.  its the test tube kind.  i dont know what i did on teh first test but i screwed it up.  i tested the water in the net and the tank and there was a 40ppm different or close to that amount of different.  i hadnt rinsed the fry bastket in  a couple days but though it was ok cause it had water flow through it.  but the net holds everything in it.  i am setting up something different to keep the babys instead of the net.  i dont know what but my DIY gen is kickin in to figure it out.  my QT/Nursery tank is occupied so i gotta come up wit somehting. any ideas?  for now im ogonna clean the baby nets couple times a day until i hopefully get something figured out tonight and tomorrow.

Order it or ask around, it is available at most of our LFS, but not the chain stores.

Actually, I KNOW you can get Prime from Petsmart. It is what I use as well. I had to stock it all the time back in the day...  :wink:

yeah i saw that.  im gonna order from them.  thanks on the 10. i have a 1 gallon hex for like bettas.  im gonna use it.  what do i do about a cycle though. i dont have any filter that has bio to run in it. i can use water from the tank but wont it try to cycle or just change water every day?  the basket seems to hold pollution. evan though i cleaned it, the nitrate is still high in the fry basket.  but the tank is down so i dont konw what deal is with that.  i cleaned the hell outta the net on that basket.

when you go to the petsmart or petco....or lfs ...look for a floating fry box instead of that netting thingie......it's somewhat better i think.....

I made a DIY floating nursery out of a plastic bin, some fishing line, and a fishing float.  Drill holes along the top with a Dremel, tie the float to one side with the fishing line, and then run more fishing line through the holes on the other side and attach a popcycle stick or something like that to hang on the outside of the tank to anchor it.

It works great, and there is no junk trapped in there like with the net nursery.  I got the plans from the HAS forum/DIY section.  It's a great design.

I could make you one, but not sure when I'll see you again.
