  • tropheus/petros do you recommend keeping?

I'm interested in keeping Tropheus and Petrochromis but I would like to know what species everyone recommends? I plan to keep the fish in a 125 or a 180 gallon. I also want to stick with a smaller petro species like famula & trewavasae. I also want to keep species that are in demand in the hobby.
    thanks for your feedback.

My vote is Trews ( or as my wife calls them bats). I just bought some Cherry Spots, adults have black bodies and two hot pink dots. Whatever you buy. Buy a lot. I really have no idea what's in demand in the hobby, anymore. Petros are always pricey.
I'm just getting back into keeping them. My first two group ever where white banded dubs, and bembas. The dubs where very hardy, and prolific. I had Kirizas sp black, very prolific, but I lost half the original WC group of 40+ to aggression.
Get ready for ups and downs. Trophs and Petros are like drugs.

Thanks for the response. I like the Bulu Point as well. Are you planning to add Trews later? Andrew is selling 17 Petrochromis Famula Chimba, but I would have to house them with my peacocks and the juvies until I get another tank. What do you think?

I love trews, but we will see. Famulas are neat looking, but not my thing. More fond of trews.

I like Kariza and Ikola tropheus. They look kinda the same but Ikola is a greyish black and Kariza is black. Talk to Vinny. That is all he keeps is tropheus.

Red and black got your back. Black and yellow kill a fellow.
Oh crap that's snakes... Not tropheus...at least I don't think so.

I would steer clear of the Famula Chimba if you're looking for something in demand, I've seen them posted multiple times and they don't sell well, for whatever reason. Can't go wrong with the Trewavasae. Stunning fish and I can see them selling much easier. If you go with Tropheus, Brichardi species are usually in high demand, but you'll be dishing out more money on the front end

I had keep few variants of Petrochromis and Tropheus but never into any type of Famula . As for Petros I alway love big Petros like Moshi, Marco Rainbow and Red Bulu Point if I ever going back to Petros , Red Bulu Point is my choose. As for Tropheus , Black variants is my favor .Kiriza, Ikola or even Bemba.
From my experience , I alway like to keep Petrochromis in decent size of tank to me at least 215 and up but I also seen a lot of hobby on here success keep them in smaller tank .

Brichardi look fantastic but I think I am leaning toward Ikola or Bulu Point since they are readily available and they seem to stay in demand. Has anyone kept Tropheus with Cyps and had success or Trews with Cyps? I am considering doing all three if I can get 180 or larger tank. I read somewhere (possibly on HFB) that petros will keep trophs from breeding but I think it depends on the setup. I am considering doing all three if I can get 180 or larger tank.

Vinny, agree with you on sp black, nothing like the contrast of bright color on a solid black body. Love the way moshi look, never had the pleasure of keeping them.
I remember seeing Alex's (Ultimate Fish) P. Reds those were AWSOME, but that Trew he had at the front of the store was my favorite fish. I bought a whole group from him over a year ago, but had to sell to Nightster, because I had to move, and because of the wifey.
Those suckers are bloat proof. If I find fry at a reasonable price, I'm gonna get some.

I've only kept tropheus 3 varieties in a tank at the most. When I kept dubs with moliro and Bemba, the dubs bred like crazy and the rest stopped breeding, until I took the dubs out. Then the moliros started breeding, but the bembas didn't breed. When I gave my moliros to Luis Navarro, the bembas started to liquidate one another but I had a lot of holding females. But by far My Kirizas were the most prolific though aggressive, but they always had their own tank for the most part.

Daves rare aquarium fish had some but they were $35 each. Moganman suggested old world exotics, they were $22 each. Considering they are not as susceptible to bloat $22 is reasonable.

The fish I was referring to in the previous post were the Trewavasae. I will keep a look out for you in case anything becomes available. Bemba are great looking tropheus too with a lot of variability. It seems like everyone around Houston has Bembas. How did you like the Moliros? Did the colony color up most of the time? Dave told me they are very prolific for a tropheus red variety.

Thanks for the tip , I will look into old world aquatics. Put them in a tank with white sand and bright lighting. They were a deep blood red. My mistake was to put them in a tank with a 8 inch (this is for real) White band dub - actually had no band just a small white dot an ugly grey blue head on a black body( The Terminator). I bought him from Alex at Ultimate Fish when he was already 6inches. I've never seen a tropheus with a hump on the head. He would pull out synodontis from the rocks. kill and eat them. He learned to kill other fish with one bite to the head. He was the lone fish in a 120. I figure he wouldn't mess with the moliros 4inch (not his kind). He killed most of them within a few hours.I gave the survivors to a friend of mine Louis Navarro (he was with NASH - planted tank club)
I even put the guy in the sump for a month and when I released him into a group of 6 inch Lufubs, he killed two of them before I could fish him out. I put him in a net for a week. He bit through the net and killed 3 fronts 8-10 inches.
He lived out the rest of his days in a 20 gallon all to himself. He's knocked the top of his tank and survived being on the floor for long periods of time. He would ram his head at me and bite the glass when he saw me coming. He met his end when I found his dried up body in my dogs bed. I guess he jumped out, and Skittles carried him away to a safe place.
